Lessons from Fashion Week

It’s fashion week in NYC which means tons of eccentric outfits that seem to only work on the runway. But whoever said you couldn’t take runway fashion off the catwalk, clearly hasn’t come to us for fashion advice. With the crazy frenzy surrounding fashion week, we have just what it takes to help you feel fashion week ready even if you aren’t attending any shows. Everyone deserves to feel their best at all times so starting off the list of Fashion Week inspiration are the following:

1. FAUX FUR: We don’t know about you but we love us some faux fur, and what better way to own the streets than wear statement faux fur. Whether you’re wearing a faux fur vest, coat or scarf, it will definitely have you feeling like you just walked off the runway.

2. COLOR BLOCKING: One trend we’ve notice this fashion season is the play on color, from mix matching orange with green to combining red and brown – they’ve definitely made a big statement with this kind of play on color, and now so can you!

3. OVERSIZED ANYTHING: What we love about this fashion season is that bigger is better! Nothing says comfort like oversized shirts, pants or sweaters! And with the help of many designers, now you can feel like you’re walking in a show by incorporating clothes, one or two sizes larger in your wardrobe.

4. LAYERING: Layers, layers and more layers! Oh how we love to layer! We don’t know about you but there’s nothing better than layering an outfit during this crazy winter season! We love the idea that you don’t have to restrict your outfit to only shirt, pants and socks but now you can go clothes crazy and wear 2 shirts if that floats your boat!

layering5. CONFIDENCE: There’s nothing that shows that you just came off the runway than confidence! This is possibly the best accessory most models have been sporting this fashion season and to truly embody what fashion week is all about, get yourself some confidence and we guarantee you’ll be feeling like everyday you are strutting your stuff on the runway!

Blanket Scarves: A Winter Closet Staple

Between you and us, there are a lot of things that make the winter horrible. On top of having to wake up for class and dealing with a limited amount of clothing that will allow you to be both warm and fashionable, winter can really be a struggle. The sad truth is, living in Canada we pretty much have no choice but to deal with it, luckily that doesn’t mean we can’t find little solutions. Personally, we find it hard to separate from the warmth of our beds, especially since we have to leave our blankets behind. The one solution for that part of the winter blues, are blanket scarves!

Blanket Scarves

A blanket scarf is a great way to stay warm this winter without having to layer up too much. It provides both the comfort your blanket at home and the fashion statement we all crave during this dull season. As if they needed another bonus, they are very easy to style. You can wrap it loosely around your shoulders, form a chunky roll around your neck, or simply wrap yourself tightly around it. Without a doubt, they are sure to bring that statement piece out in your winter outfit. Don’t waste anymore time and get yourself one before the winter ends, we surely recommend it.

Winter Trends: Men’s Edition

Welcome back everyone! Now that we are back at school, it’s time to accept that winter break is sadly and slowly fading into a far away memory, for many of you filled with gorgeous tans, bikinis and high-waisted shorts. On the bright side, at least now we can all work on recovering from our horrendous sunburns.

Girls, it’s time we give the boys some of the fashion limelight and help them out with some critical do’s and don’ts for winter looks. Just because we are forced to brave negative degree weather, does not mean women or men should have to discard enthusiasm for fashion.

Here are 10 essential trends for winter that every man must keep in mind when looking through their closet if they want to dress to impress.

Watch: In this cold weather, why keep your handsome wrists naked? Wearing a nice watch is essential, especially in the winter when bundling up means hiding trendy shirts and accessories. It is the perfect way to add class to your outfit. Although this winter essential is more on the pricier side, you will have it for many years (and winters) to come. Check out the watches GQ is obsessed with for the New Year.

Watches

Winter hat: Boys, stick to the classic winter hat.

We know it’s cold, but you must stay away from your grandmother’s hand-knit cottage project and stick to the standard wool beanie. Not only will it keep you warm and help save yourself from a horrific hair day, it will add to your look and it’s an easy accessory to throw on last minute.

Vests: Although you guys might have wanted to opt for a chunky sweater with a bulky jacket on top, there are better ways to keep warm and stay fashionable.A vest can be a critical layering piece and can keep you extremely warm in this frigid weather. There are so many options out there, go out and do some vest shopping and I’m sure you’ll be surprised at how good they look (and how warm they are!)

Vests

The Manly Scarf (Tie! Tie! Tie!) Forget about the over the shoulder homeless look. If you want a classy winter look and want to keep warm, you must tie your scarf in the best way possible. If you are still unsure, just avoid the Lenny Kravitz-esque look and we are sure you’ll be fine. Here are three possible options of wearing them: Parisian Knot (left), Once-Around Knot (Middle), and Loose Once-Around Knot (Right).

Scarves

Urban Down Jacket: If you are not a vest guy, don’t freak out. There are other options for you like this urban down jacket, which comes in many styles and is perfect fora slim and thin look, functioning as an essential layering piece. You can wear this beauty over your clothes to stay nice and toasty while looking amazingly handsome.Urban Down Jacket

Winter boots: When it comes to boots, you really only need to know one thing: avoid UGG boots. They might be comfy, and us girls might have the privilege of getting away with them, but to be completely honest there are so many better boots out there (boots that will withstand the snow and salt too!). The leather work boot for example is a rugged handsome shoe that will withstand the winter brutalities if properly maintained, and look good with any outfit. Hand over those UGG boots to your girlfriend.

Boots

Leather Stitched Gloves: Stepping into your car in negative 20 degrees can be pretty brutal, especially on your warm hands which are obligated to grab onto that freezing steering wheel. Treat yourself to leather gloves, they will look amazing and add a level of maturity to your outfit, along with keeping those man hands toasty warm.

Black Jeans: For those days you decide to retire the sweatpants and sweatshirt and go for a classy look, grab those black jeans. They are perfect for winter and will pair nice with an Irish fisherman sweater (not your grandmother’s knit sweater), creating a clean and crisp winter look perfect for any occasion. You can also pair your jeans with a tweed blazer for a fancier occasion, the blazer is meant to keep you warm and help you stay fashionable.Black Jeans

The Beard: If you can pull it off, it’s time to ditch the razor guys. We are not talking about a full-fledged Santa Clause beard here, but you can let your face gain a (little) blanket of warmth and grow that facial hair out.
Not only is it warm and cozy, but also it looks great in the wintertime and most women love it!Beard

90s Throwback: Chokers

Past fashion trends always make their way back into style. From crop tops, to ripped jeans and combat boots, ‘90s fashion is at the forefront of the 2014/2015 fashion year.

One popular craze from the ‘90s was choker necklaces. Chokers are great for adding bling to a casual outfit or for making a serious statement. Celebrities Kylie Jenner and Miley Cyrus have been styling the super-tight necklace in a variety of different forms. The chocker market is full of cool styles ranging from metal chokers, to tattoo chokers to the ones covered with dainty flowers. No matter what your style is, you’ll be sure to find the right one for you this season.

‘Tis the Season for Fashion

It’s that time of year again! Students are boarded up in their rooms, mildly un-showered and decked in last winter’s sweats – working hard to make it through the year in one piece. Exams have had their toll on a lot of us, but have no fear – party season is near! Soon enough, most of us will be trading pencils in for classic pumps. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, any other celebration or even none of the above…we at OHM have got you covered for greeting all of the end-of-the year’s festivities with a stylish bang. Much like how a lot of us are probably looking back upon the past year nostalgically, the fashion world has been looking backwards for this winter style guide.

Formal Dress

What else screams ‘classic’ more than the world revered LBD? This year has really been focused on the normcore, super basic loose fit minidress. Maybe throw some fringe work in there? Very flapper-esque.

However, 50’s sex appeal is still running strong; in any dress you wear this year, don’t fear the deep V scoop, the keyhole slit, side slit, or the more romantic open back look.

Looking for something a bit more conservative at the family get-togethers? Throw a turtle neck on under your more revealing dresses – totally 70’s. A great way to keep warm and add a vintage touch. Maybe even consider touching an old dress up with an embroidered collar, or a silk bow tie for a more gothic appeal.

Our theme at OHM this year is infinity, so don’t forget your timeless winter party elements! Get romantic with some velvet pieces, try a peplum skirt out, and do not undermine the power of a cute tea dress. Even lace and silk, in conservative doses, can add the right dimension of texture for a more fancy arrangement.

For New Years, you are allowed to go all out: Outshine the fireworks shows, and embrace the metallics, the sparkles, and the sequins. It’s all you!

Accessories

Experiment with textures and layers, and do not be shy with your jewellery. Inject some colour with a chunky bracelet or two, or maybe grab a couple of your favourite rings.

The most recent comeback has been the bejeweled headband. A lifesaver for when you’re on the go, wrap your hair in a quick updo and accent it with one of these.

Finally, if you’re looking for a convenient and cheap glam up – put on some chandelier earrings and sweep your hair to the side. Red lipstick, anybody?

And if you don’t want to sacrifice comfort for style, pointed toe flats (or even cute ankle booties) will do the trick.

A little bit overwhelmed? Okay, we will give you some leeway here; a tacky Christmas sweater is totally okay to wear. Just make sure you dress it up with a cute skirt, some thigh highs…and big smile. You made it through the year. Congratulations; see you in 2015!

Grow Your MO For Movember

OHM would like to wish a happy Movember to everyone! All month we are celebrating the ‘stache in support of the Movember Foundation and men’s health. I mean, who doesn’t love a little facial hair on our boys anyway? We love contributing to student initiatives on our campus, and one very dear to our heart happens to be Movember. Considering we ourselves proudly support the Canadian Cancer Society, we have educated ourselves a lot on both cancer research and ways we can all get involved in the fight against cancer.

That said, Movember is closely related to our cause, and we are just as keen to raise awareness for it! In support, check out OHM’s Movember 2014 photo shoot on our Facebook page. In the mean time, we sat down with our our wonderful photography coordinator, Lindsay Stockhamer, the creative director for the Movember shoot, for a little behind-the-scenes information:

What do you believe is the most important message of Movember?

The most important message of Movember is simply to get people talking about and supporting men’s cancer and mental health. Talking is the first step to doing, so OHM has found a lot of creative ways to appeal to our student demographic by making Movember a fun thing for Western students to take part in. We had our Movember photo shoot, which was a great way to get people talking on social media, so that leads to other initiatives such as selling the chocolate moustaches featured in the photo shoot, putting on a charity party event at Cobra London, etc.

What was your inspiration behind the photo shoot in terms of style and production?

I was inspired by the T-Birds from Grease, and particularly, the famous scene during the “Summer Nights” sequence when the guys are all on the bleachers. I knew I wanted to make this an all-men’s shoot, so I was going for a really rugged, old-school look, but also something that people can immediately resonate with by thinking, “Oh, this reminds me of Grease!” I wanted that instantaneous connection.

As the photography coordinator for OHM, this is your third photo shoot of the year. What’s your favourite part of the process?

Definitely the people. Its such a blast working with such a multi-talented team of photographers, production assistants, stylists, makeup artists, and of course the models for each shoot, and watching all that planning and everyone’s creative input all come together in the finished product is so rewarding.

With the weather getting colder, what are some of your favourite style tips and tricks for men this winter?

The great thing about so many trends for Fall/Winter 2014 is so many of them are so unisex and versatile, that men can rock just as fabulously as women. So I tell couples there’s no shame in borrowing each other’s staple items like beanies, flannels, big scarves, etc. Also guys, invest in a structured, classic black coat with a nice lapel that will take you everywhere for years to come, and do not underestimate the power of layering – layering shirts, sweaters, scarves, etc. Its not just for the ladies – its an effortlessly cool look when done right.

So there you have it! Be sure to get your Rocky Mountain Chocolate moustaches from any OHM club executive member. Also, make sure to head to Rocky Mountain Chocolate at Masonville Mall to receive a 10% discount on these delicious hand made treats. For all you ladies out there who can’t grow a ‘stache, at least you’ll be able to indulge in our delicious moustache treats!
